Liverpool film-maker shortlisted for prestigious award

Date: 28 October 2011

A Liverpool film-maker has been shortlisted for the prestigious Virgin Media Shorts film award with his social documentary film, ‘MES’.

Ian Gamester makes films in the UK and overseas through his creative business keeponmovin’ and has received business advice and support through ACME at Liverpool Vision.

His film MES (Musical Ear Syndrome) focuses on his Grandmother, Cath Gamester, who developed the affliction following treatment for depression.

Ian said: “I’m really honoured that my film has be shortlisted. I’m surprised that such a simple project has struck a chord with so many. But my Nan is the star of the film who tells her story in such a compelling and poignant way.

“If I am lucky enough to win I will certainly use the prize money to make a film in Liverpool. I have a few ideas running through my mind, but I don’t want to get ahead of myself.”

After graduating with a film degree in London, Ian worked as a freelance cameraman for the BBC and Channel 4 and has made films around the world, in countries including Japan, France, Italy, Thailand, Spain, Germany, United Arab Emirates, USA, Australia and Holland.

As well as promotional videos, he has worked on drama projects and made short films which have been screened at international festivals and US cinema chains. His next drama project is a pilot for a TV series. He has also worked on community projects and shares his film-making skills and experience through occasional projects in youth groups and schools.

Kevin McManus, Director of ACME, said: “This is yet another example of the creative business we are helping to grow in Liverpool and export overseas, so we are delighted that Ian has achieved this recognition for his talent as a film-maker.”

Ian’s film MES is one of 12 films shortlisted for the awards which will be made in November. To view the film and vote visit: http://www.virginmediashorts.co.uk/film/1559/mes
