Award-winning Gateway Conference Centre has received a £26,000 grant to help make its facilities even greener.

The cash boost will enable the London Road centre to accelerate its sustainable conferencing plans and expand its existing environmental practices.

The Gateway Centre – awarded the Silver level in the Green Tourism Business Scheme, 2009 – will create a “green room”, re-equip the current ICT suite with an efficient power saving network, and improve accessibility in the reception area of the two–storey building.

Capacitybuilders awarded The Gateway Centre the £26,542.00 grant as part of its £2.2 million 2010 Capital Investment Programme to help transform local community buildings.

The Gateway Centre, established in 2002, is renowned for its green ethos. From using recyclable resources in all meeting rooms to installing energy efficient lighting and using energy efficient appliances, the centre is always looking for innovative ways to reduce its impact on the environment.

Nigel Byrne, Gateway Centre Manager, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this grant. It will greatly help us accelerate our plans to be a sustainable green business. I am very proud of the achievements we have made in cutting waste and becoming more energy efficient. We are committed to going green and hope more businesses will follow our lead.”

The 200 sq ft “Green Room” will provide additional flexible space for training, interviews and assessments. While the ICT suite, comprising 16 workstations, will be upgraded to a new network, reducing power consumption and enabling cheaper upgrade costs in the future. Improvements to the entrance area include more efficient automatic doors and a new contemporary seating area.

Speaking about the grant award, Jon Fox, Director of Policy and Programmes at Capacitybuilders, said: “Our 2010 Capital Programme prioritised investment in sustainability, with a particular focus on how the third sector could be better supported during the economic downturn. We are delighted to make this grant award and enable The Gateway Centre to help make its facilities even greener and improve the services it offers to local community groups.”
